Alena Kostornaia from Russia continued to set new records on her way to the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final gold medal and led her teammates Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova to a first clean sweep in the Ladies discipline in the senior-level Final. Trusova became the first female skater to land a quadruple flip in competition. 2018 ISU Grand Prix Final Champion Rika Kihira (JPN) landed a clean triple Axel to move up from sixth to fourth at 216.47 points. Bradie Tennell (USA) finished fifth (212.18 points). Olympic Champion Alina Zagitova (RUS) dropped from second to sixth after several errors.
Kostornaia opened her performance to “New Moon” and “Supermassive Black Hole” The 2018 ISU Junior Grand Prix Final Champion followed up with six triple jumps and difficult spins and footwork to post a personal best in the Free Skating with 162.14 points and a new highest total score of 247.59 points overall. “I was motivated to beat the record (for total score) today. I try to skate the best I can every time. I’m very happy because just like yesterday I managed to skate clean, and of course having so many people in the ice rink helped me to do this,” the 2018 ISU World Junior silver medalist said.
Dancing to “Six Gnossiennes” and “Firebird”, Shcherbakova won the Free Skating with 162.65 points. With 240.92 points overall, she moved up to second place. “I feel good about my skate and my result, but I’m a little bit sad that I didn’t land my quad flip. I’m happy I did everything else. It’s the first time I’ve tried it (the quad flip) and I will do it better next time,” Shcherbakova noted.
Skating to “Games of Thrones”, Trusova scored 161.73 points in the Free Skating and accumulated 233.18 points to pull up one spot to third. “The quad flip was one of the main goals for this event and I’m glad that I did it and I’m also happy with bronze. But I’m upset that I missed the triple Axel in the short program, popped the Salchow and missed the toe. It made me upset because I skated this program clean with all five quads on practices and here on warmup I also did everything well. I think I was a little bit nervous and got tired by the end of the program,” Trusova said.
