The new Palavela is the reinterpretation, by architect Gae Aulenti, of the Palazzo delle Mostre (Exhibition Palace), also known as Palazzo a Vela or Palavela (due to its shape similar to that of a sail). The building was inaugurated for the celebrations of Italia 61, for the 100 years of the Italian Unification, with the purpose of hosting exhibitions and conventions.
Renovated and reinterpreted in 2004 in order to house the Olympics’ figure skating and short track competitions of Torino 2006, in 2010 it has welcomed more than 88.000 spectators of sports events, entertainment and shows; after that the average attendance has settled at about 70.000 spectators per year, making it the most relevant structure in Torino when it comes to ice sports entertainment and much more.
In the past few years the Palavela has become a pole of excellence inside the city when it comes to sports related entertainment: it has hosted prestigious international competitions like the ULEB Basketball Cup in 2008, the World Figure Skating Championship in 2010, the Davis Cup in 2013 and the Men’s European Volleyball Championship in 2015.
The Palavela is also used as an evocative and logistically convenient location for galas and shows both on and off the ice, as well as for conventions, formal dinners and parties. Along with the parterre, the structure also offers a series of spaces that are suitable for various events.
It can host up to 8.500 people. For more information click here.
